23 Mar 2007 - More Cup Final Success - Under 11's Rugby Triumph AGAIN!
The St Clare's Under 11 Rugby team picked up their second piece of silverware in a fortnight with a hard earned 17 -14 win in the Wyn Evans Shield. Their opponents on the night were Blaengarw Primary School who always looked dangerous on the counter-attack. St Clare's led by 7 - 0 at half time but Blaengarw struck back early in the second half to level the scores. St Clare's then dominated proceedings and scored two further unconverted tries taking the score to 17 -7.St Clare's played continually on the front foot and there were several near misses before Blaengarw counter-attacked and their speedy centre rounded the St Clare's defence to set up a thrilling last three minutes to bring the scores to 17 - 14. As you can imagine the last few minutes were frantic but St Clare's held out for a much deserved win. Full credit must be given to Blaengarw and the game was palyed in a tremendous spirit. St Clare's win was down to several factors but one of the main reasons for our recent success was the tackling. Earlier in the season only half the team were really committed to this contact aspect of the game but the boys have really matured in the last few weeks and have started to play for each other by putting pressure on their opponents. Well Done to all the squad. They will receive their individual plaques in several weeks time at the annual Bridgend District Schools' Presentation.
